NEW REPORT HIGHLIGHTS NEW YORK LEADING NATION IN LIFE SCIENCES JOB GROWTH, RESEARCH, FUNDING & INNOVATION

The US Biosciences Economy 2026 Report

Overview

New York ranks among the top three states in six national measures of bioscience research, investment and production, according to the 2026 U.S. Bioscience Economy report. The biennial report, produced by TEConomy Partners with BIO and the Council of State Bioscience Associations (CSBA), covers 2021 through 2025.
The state’s bioscience industry supported 118,906 jobs across 6,397 businesses in 2025. New York placed in the top quintile of states on all four of the report’s research and innovation measures.

New York’s edge is the full pipeline: top-tier research funding, the capital to commercialize it, and the manufacturing base to produce it. For founders, students and job seekers, that means more paths from lab to company to career within the state.
Two points from the report are worth watching:
• Federal research funding. The report lists New York among major NIH recipient states whose funding declined over 2021–2025, so sustaining that pipeline is a policy priority.
• Specialization. New York’s bioscience economy is large but spread across sectors; it is not among the eight states specialized in three or more subsectors. Growth in biomanufacturing and labs is the opportunity to deepen that concentration.

The Big Picture

“These findings underscore New York’s strength as a life sciences leader, driving sustained growth, creating high-quality jobs, and advancing world-class research,” said Jennifer Hawks Bland, CEO of NewYorkBIO, who also serves as the Vice Chair of the CSBA. “This momentum is fueled by strategic investment by state and local governments, industry leaders, academic institutions, and entrepreneurs across the Empire State. As our ecosystem continues to expand year-over-year, New York is well positioned to attract talent and capital, translate groundbreaking science into new companies, and advance treatments for patients across the globe.”

NewYorkBIO will keep advocating for policies that support life sciences research, commercialization and economic opportunity across the state.
