Overview

In partnership with New York City Economic Development Corporation and Women. NYC, Genspace’s Break into Biotech is a 3-month training program consisting of hands-on training, networking, mentorship, and career development opportunities necessary for New Yorkers to enter NYC’s rapidly growing biotech sector. This program is for people who are changing careers, or looking to start on a career pathway in the life sciences; high school graduates or those who have a GED, but aren’t interested in going to college right now; curious about working in the life sciences field; and recent college graduates who want more lab experience for their resume.

The program is structured in three parts:
1. Hands-on learning workshops
– Basic molecular cloning techniques: DNA isolation and purification, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), restriction enzymes and ligations, bacterial transformation, microbial culturing and sterile technique.
– Advanced lab techniques: genome editing with CRISPR-Cas9, synthetic biology techniques, next-generation sequencing, and microbiome research.

2. Project-based learning through short-term mentored research
– Participants will dive more deeply into a specific project of interest to the cohort with mentorship from Genspace staff and volunteers. Projects will focus on developing the technical skills that are most in-demand by employers.

3. Networking and events for professional development
– Genspace and industry partners will host events like career talks and networking nights to connect program participants with possible employers.
– Program participants will have opportunities to share their projects with industry partners, other lab members, and members of the general public.

Time commitment:
Program start date: October 18, 2026
Program end: January 28, 2027

Program will have a minor break in December for the holidays and wrap up in January 2027.
